The first-of-its-kind, one-day Masterclass on Metabolic Syndrome in Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS), titled “The Worrisome Twosome,” was held on March 24, 2024, at KIMS Hospital, Secunderabad. This pioneering academic event, held in collaboration with The PCOS Society of India and KIMS Fertility Centre, aimed to address the critical intersection between PCOS and Metabolic Syndrome, a prevalent and complex clinical issue among women. The event was conducted under Dr. S. Vyjayanthi’s leadership, with Dr. Duru Shah serving as the Chairperson and Dr. Kanthi Bansal as a member of the Managing Committee.
The masterclass explored essential aspects of the pathophysiology, diagnosis, screening, prevention, and management of metabolic syndrome in women with PCOS. A central focus was placed on the interplay between insulin resistance, obesity, and cardiovascular risk factors, which exacerbate metabolic complications in this population. The discussions emphasized the importance of early identification and prompt intervention to mitigate long-term health risks, including type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular diseases, which are disproportionately prevalent in women with PCOS. The session provided actionable insights for clinicians, offering practical strategies to enhance patient care and clinical outcomes.
A distinguished panel of both international and national experts contributed to the event. Prof. Gerard Conway and Dr. Ephia Yasmin shared a global perspective on the management of metabolic syndrome in PCOS, drawing from their extensive experience in endocrinology and metabolic health. Additionally, Dr. Duru Shah, Dr. Vyjayanthi, Dr. Shashank R. Joshu, Dr. Kanthi Bansal, and Dr. Shobana Patted provided their expertise in gynecology, endocrinology, and metabolic disorders, delivering an integrated and multidisciplinary approach to managing this complex condition.
The masterclass facilitated a dynamic exchange of ideas among gynecologists, endocrinologists, and other specialists, fostering collaboration and promoting a more comprehensive approach to managing PCOS-related metabolic complications. The event underscored the need for a multidisciplinary model of care to address the multifactorial nature of metabolic syndrome in women with PCOS. By enhancing clinicians’ understanding of the intersection between gynecological, metabolic, and cardiovascular health, the masterclass contributed to advancing clinical practice and improving long-term health outcomes for women affected by PCOS. The event received widespread acclaim for its depth of content, innovative approach, and significant contribution to the ongoing discourse in PCOS and metabolic health.
